(Dog Training After Government Service)
Heaven Can Wait Animal Society (HCWAS) is proud to announce the launch of a new partnership with Veterans Village. Veterans Village is a non-profit temporary housing facility whose mission is to help our United States veterans with housing and comprehensive support services provided by collaborative agencies that already exist in Southern Nevada.
Dog T.A.G.S. is modeled after another successful HCWAS program, Pups on Parole. Pups on Parole is where dogs are housed with, and trained by, inmates in the women’s Southern Nevada Correctional Facility before going into our adoption program.
These dogs may have been traumatized, neglected, or abused and thereby, may have lost trust in humans. Our soldiers risk their lives while protecting our freedoms. The transition from war zones back to civilian life can be very difficult and complicated. The veterans will be working to rehabilitate the dogs and in return, the dogs are companions who provide the veterans with unconditional love. The Dog T.A.G.S. program is a win/win situation as the bond between them helps both to heal.
HCWAS will train veteran residents how to properly care for their animal. Veterans who participate will be responsible for keeping their dog active, as well as the dogs grooming and ensuring the dog is fed and crated when left alone. HCWAS will provide food, grooming, collars, leashes, treats and toys, as well as assume financial responsibility for all veterinarian visits while in the program. Both the veterans and the dogs will undergo rigorous training with a HCWAS trainer. Once the dog has completed their training, they will receive Canine Good Citizen from AKC.
The plan is to provide companion dogs to hundreds, if not thousands, of veterans. When the veteran leaves Veterans Village, they will have the option to adopt the dog, at no cost.
